# Strength of Materials

If we look around us we see tall buildings, long bridges, and unimaginable structures. Did it ever occur to you how all of this is reliable?

That’s where the strength of the materials come into the picture. Because of the strength of a material, we rely on those structures and live in those tall buildings and drive on those long bridges.

The aim of Strength of material:  To derive an expression for deformation, stress, strain developed under differential loading conditions by using experimentally determined processes.

The aim of design: To develop a design using strength of material with appropriate manufacturing processes in such a way that component perform its functionality without any failure.

## Mohr’s Circle (Stress and Strain Part-5)

Mohr’s circle is a graphical representation of a general state of stress at a point. With the help of Mohr’s Circle, we can evaluate principal stress, maximum shear stresses, also normal and tangential stress at any plane. Many questions come in exam related to principal stress and with help of Mohr’s circle they are solved in …

## Principal Plane & Principal Stress (Stress and Strain Part-4)

Before proceeding to two dimensional stress system. Let’s us understand few technical terms which are generally asked during interview questions. Principal Plane: A plane at which shear stress is Zero, is known as principal plane. Principal Stress: When on principal plane normal stress is acting ,then it is known as principal stress. There are two types …

## Elongation in taper Rod, Volumetric Strain (Stress and Strain Part-3)

In this section we are going to discuss three points Elongation in taper Rod Elongation in a object due to self weight Volumetric Strain Elongation in Taper Rod Let us consider a circular taper rod of length l whose diameter is changing uniformly from d to D. Let us consider a small element of a …

## Stress-Strain & Thermal Stress (Stress and Strain Part-1)

Stress: When a body is subjected to an external force, resisting forces will be generated inside the body. This resisting force per unit area is stress. It is denoted by σ For e.g. spring is placed on your hand and you press it or stretches it, compression or tensile forces generate. Strain: When a body is subjected to …
